Read the following passage carefully:
The destruction of the rain forest is the most urgent problem. This has
become a major problem needing immediate attention. The reason can
be attributed to the fact that in recent decades humans have felled
more and more forest for selfish reasons that is both for timber and to
clear the land beneath for agriculture. The fact remains that only half
of the world's rain forest remains and the rest is disappearing fast. An
area twice the size of Austria is cleared every year, which is an alarming
problem. As the forest is destroyed all the plants and animals of the
forest will disappear along with it. Yet the tragedy of the destruction
of the rain forest is not just
the wild life but the valuable resources that
humans are loosing since half of the world's species live in the rain forest.
Felling the rain forest causes many problems for people. The forest
trees used to act like sponges soaking up water during storms and
releasing it more slowly into the atmosphere through their leaves
With the forest gone the rain now pours down rivers causin
devastating floods killing thousands of people. Without the trees
release water back into the air the floods are followed by equally serio
droughts again leading to a serious loss of lives. Yet another proble
is the soil that is left after the trees are cleared is much too poor
support farm crops or grazing animals for long. With a loss of
forests we have lost the potential benefits that could come from
forest plants. This is in the field of medicine. Scientists estimate
2000 of these plants might have value in treating cancer for exar
and others might be useful against AIDS. To date less than a hund-
fall rain forest plants have been tested for their value to medicin
Rousands of them could become extinct unless the forests can be saved
