Charles Steinmetz was also known among his neighbors for his kindness and generosity to all creatures. When an animal was in need, he was the one upon whom the neighbors would call. His concern stretched so far that he went without heat for an entire winter because a family of field mice had built their home in the stove that heated his laboratory.
