1 Though fun to watch, chimpanzees should not be kept as pets. 2 They are dangerously stronger than
any NFL Lineman. 3 Adult chimps weigh only 100 to 160 pounds, but have been measured pulling six
to nine times their own weight—with one hand. 4 Thus to match the strength of an average chimp, a
human being would have to be able to register a two- handed pull of about a ton; it takes a very strong
man to pull a quarter of that. 5 Combined with this strength is the fact that chimp is capable of losing its
temper –for reasons known only to the chimp. 6 Chimps signal their feelings with subtle cues of
behavior that aren’t apparent to most humans. 7 It’s quite possible for chimp to be on the verge of
violence while its owner sits unaware or even unknowingly continues to provoke it. 8 Furthermore, it’s
not wise to keep a cute young chimp and release it into the wild when it becomes dangerous. 9 Wild-
raised chimps will routinely gang up on and kill those raised in captivity.

1 Police officers complain that many of the criminals they arrest end up very soon on the street
to commit crimes again. 2 Judges argue that because of the technicalities of the law, they are
forced to free many defendants, some of whom may be guilty as charged. 3 Government
officials lament that they don’t have the funds or space to build new prisons. 4 And many
citizens charge that the police, the judges, or the government officials are not doing their jobs
well. 5 Clearly the way the huge problem of crime is being handled angers and frustrates many
segments of our society.

1 A century ago medical practice left much to be desired. 2 In the late 1800s, surgeons still
operated with bare hands; wearing the same clothes they had worn on the street. 3 Their shoes
carried into the surgery room the debris of the streets and hospital corridors. 4 Spectators were
often permitted to observe operations, gathering around the patient within touching distance
of the incision. 5 Surgeons used surgical dressings made from pressed sawdust, a waste
product from the floors of sawmills. 6 Surgical instruments were washed in soapy water, but
not heat-sterilized or chemically disinfected. 7 The mortality rate following operations in many
hospitals was as high as 90 percent.

1 When we speak of a “close friend” we usually mean an intimate friend, not a friend who is
standing close by. 2 However, according to the researchers who study human behavior, there
are in fact four “distance zones” in human interaction. 1 First, intimate distance is the closest
zone, eighteen inches or less. 4 This is the zone of making love, for instance, and also physical
confrontation (in your face”). 5 Second is the personal distance, eighteen inches to four feet
which is used for everyday conversations with friends. 6 Then there is social distance, four to
seven feet, which we use for most interactions with strangers, such as buying something in a
store. 7 The fourth zone is public distance twelve feet or more. 8 A public speaker or a singer at
concert is usually at least twelve from the nearest audience.
