What do you think is the poet’s profession?

The poet is a teacher.

Who is he talking about?

He is talking about his students.

Pick the words which describe the attitude of the poet: 3

Irritable (When will the bell ring, and end this weariness?)

Bored (Why should we beat our heads against the wall
Of each other? I shall sit and wait for the bell.)

Frustrated (I can haul them and urge them no more. I will not waste my soul and my strength for this.
What do I care for all that they do amiss!)

Defiant (What does it matter to me, if they can write
A description of a dog, or if they can’t? I do not, and will not;)

Say why you have picked these words:

I have picked up these words because they aptly describe the mood of the words picked by me.

Why do you think the poet has this attitude?

The poet has this attitude because the poet does not have the patience of a true teacher. Learning is a tough task that requires many attempts and controlling the distracting thoughts. However, the poet appears to have not known the responsibilities of a true teacher. He does not seem to have the right aptitude and attitude.

What does the poet mean by the following lines “I cannot start…no more.”

He means he can’t start explaining the concept again which the children might not have understood. He might have not been able to control the students in the class.

Which is the main metaphor in the poem?

The main metaphor is ‘My pack of unruly hounds!’. He compares his students to a pack of savage and wild dogs.

Match the words (from the poem) in the left-hand column with the definitions on the right. There is
one extra word.
Pack-- Group
Amiss-- Wrong
Haul-- Pull with effort
Abyss-- Very deep chasm
Unruly -- Indisciplined
Might-- Strength
Tug-- Pull with sharp, powerful movements
Urge-- Encourage
Leash -- Lead used to control a dog
Hounds -- Dogs used for hunting
