It is true that life today is very busy. The fast changing lifestyle and increasing competition make it imperative for couples to work harder for the well-being of their family—especially for themselves and their children. They have quite callously excluded their parents from the scheme. They have forgotten the compassion and care that their parents invested in them when they were dependent. The dream of reaping a rich harvest of the compassion and care invested is shattered when parents are dependent in their old age. The play Dear Departed teaches us that the elders should make their own provisions for their old age so that they are not helpless in case their offspring don’t take care of them.
