4.11: Workplace Behavior Scenarios
Scenario A
Grace has been working at Alnor Hotel for 4 months as a receptionist. She greets guests and answers
any questions about the hotel. Grace lives a bit far from the office, so it takes her one hour to get to
work. Her supervisor noticed that over the last month Grace has been arriving half an hour late and is
often on the phone quarreling with her aunt. The supervisor has given Grace two warnings now.
One day, Grace arrives 20 minutes late due to traffic. When she arrives, she sees her supervisor helping
a customer. Once the customer departs, the supervisor informs Grace that she will no longer need Grace
to work for her. She needs someone who can be on time and responsive to customer needs.
*What could have grace done differently so that she would not have lost her job?

She should not have mixed her personal life with her work life, although the situation about traffic was understandable it wouldn't really be a convincing argument if she were to try and explain why she was late today to her supervisor (given the fact that for the past month she has been half an hour late every day). If she had opted to not take her aunt's calls during work hours it wouldn't have been a problem. Even if she had problems at home and her home was a bit far away that's solely her problem, it shouldn't affect her work. Seeing that she cannot separate her personal life and work-life she had it coming to get dismissed from her job. If she were wiser, she wouldn't have done what she did, that would have let her keep her job.
