Read the following sentence from your lesson and notice the underlined word.
May I stay with you
The underlined word 'may' is a helping verb .it is used to take or give permission in a formal way.
But can is used to take or give permission in a formal way.
can I leave this place (taking permission)
You can go now. (Giving permission)
May has another use also. it is used to express possibility
e.g. It may rain today.

May :-

We use may to refer to weak possibility in the present and future: The economy may go up or down in the next year. (I think both are possible, the economy going up or the economy going down. I am not making either one a strong possibility.)

Can :-

used to say that what a person does or feels is understandable or that a person should not be blamed for doing or feeling something.
