Read the following story and answer the following given below:
Raja Krishnadevaraya was the king of Vijayanagar. His court had a poet and jester named Tenali
Raman, who was well known for his wit and intelligence. Once an artist came to Raja
Krishnadevaraya’s court. The artist showed the king and his courtiers his painting. The king was very
impressed with his painting.
He said to the artist, “You are truly talented, because your paintings made me feel the peace of
village life”. The king rewarded him with a bag of gold and asked him to stay at his court and paint
more beautiful paintings. The artist felt honoured and readily accepted his proposal.
However Tenali Raman was not happy. He told the king,”I don’t think that these paintings are
that good. We can see only one side of the men in the painting. Where is the other side of these men
where cow’s face. Quit irritated at this, the exclaimed. ”Are you a fool? Everything cannot be
painted! The missing objects in a painting must be imagined”.
Listening to this, Tenali challenged, “If I had paint, I bet I could paint better painting than this”.
This challenge amused the king and so he said to TenaliRaman,”I’II provide you the paint and paper.
You may take leave from the court for a month and paint a better painting than the artist’s. The promised
to award him with a bag of gold and the title of ‘King of Artist’ if he liked Tenali’s painting. The
courtierss smiled and giggled because they knew that Tenali could not paint.Tenali left the court angrily.
After a month Tenali enter into the court with two men, carrying his painting, that was covered
as Tenali signalled they uncovered the painting. It was an empty canvas with a few curved strokes of
black on the right corner and a few lines of green below it.
Tenali said to the king, “Sir, look at this beautiful horse that I have drawn. It is a black stallion with a
star on its forehead. It has a polished leather saddle on it. I wish I could take its rein in my hand”.
The king was insulted at this false description of this false description of the painting. He
retorted,”Do you think that I’m a fool? You have drawn nothing on this canvas!”Tenali smiled and
said,”You told me that one has to imagine the missing details while looking at the painting. Whenyou
look at my painting, imagine that the horse is grazing on the grass in the outdoors. Its tail can be seen at
the corner of the painting.
