In Madhya Pradesh lives the famous Adivasi tribe called the Gonds. The word 'Gond' comes
from the Dravidian word 'Kond', which means 'green mountains'. The hill tribe lives happily
surrounded by nature. They worship the goddess Parvati and the god Shiva and have many
rituals which involve nature. While some Gonds are farmers, others take care of cattle. The
tribe believes that a spirit lives in every element of nature, whether it is a mountain, a raindrop,
a pebble or a tree. That is why they worship and respect nature; taking care to preserve it and
safeguard it. They are an artistic group of people. As a mark of respect, each member paints
beautiful and complex designs and images from nature on the floor and walls of their home.
They believe that beautiful art on their floors and walls will bring good luck. They draw these
images as protection from evil forces. A religious group of people, they put their faith on the
beauty of their artwork. The Gond tribe is a perfect example of a healthy relationship between
man and nature.
