It set him wondering what made the fruit fall. Why should it not go up? It must be pulled down by some kind of force and that was gravity . It is an interesting tale because Newton was interested not so much why the fruit fall, but in why the moon and planets do not fall. This is what the theory of gravity, was to explain for the first time. He proved that just as the earth attracted the moon the reason why the moon does not fall is that it is moving round the earth at a certain speed. This sometimes applies to the earth itself and all the heavenly bodies circling the sun. Others had tried to explain the motions of the planets and the stars but none of them could give as good explanation as Newton. For this and other achievements he is often regarded as one of the founders of modern science.
