b) The Odisha's coast is vital to the olive ridley population in the world because, in Odisha, the mouth of the rivers Rushikulya and Devi host nesting of olive ridleys. Olive ridley sea turtles migrate in huge numbers from the beginning of November, every year, for mating and nesting along the coast of Odisha.

c) After laying the eggs, the turtles fill up the pits with sand and try to camouflage the site. And off they trek towards the sea, leaving the eggs to hatch themselves. The eggs will incubate in the heat of the sand. After about 45-65 days, the eggs begin to hatch. Soon after, the hatchings make their way uncannily to the vast ocean. Only one in a thousand hatchlings will survive to reach adulthood.

d) Nesting and survival of olive ridleys hatchings is affected by predators like feral dogs, birds, fishing trawlers, light pollution and climatic changes like erosion of coastal areas, melting polar ice, increased sea and beach temperatures.

e) The turtles are known to swim thousands of miles before returning to their birthplace to lay eggs. They find their way home by relying on unique magnetic signatures along the coast. Scientists are unsure how turtles detect the geomagnetic field but its possible that tiny magnetic particles in their brain help them process unique signatures, they say.
