Read the paragraph given below and answer the following questions (4)
Take a small piece of iron nail and beat it with a hammer. Then repeat the same
treatment with a coal piece. The shape of the iron nail changes on beating with a
hammer. If it is beaten harder it can change into sheets. This property of metals by
which they can be beaten into thin sheets is called malleability. This is a characteristic
property of metals. On the other hand materials like coal cannot be beaten into thin
sheets.
a. Name two metals besides iron which show this property?
b. What is malleability?
c. Give any one use in daily life where malleability property of metals is used?
d. Name two materials which do not show this property
Answers
Required Answer:-
a) Name two metals besides iron which show this property?
- Have you seen jewelleries made up of gold and silver? They are metals beaten up and given desirable shapes.
b) What is malleability?
- The property of metals in which they can be beaten up without breaking for various purposes.
- They are made into thin sheets.
c) Give any one use in daily life where malleability property of metals is used?
- Jewelleries and ornaments.
- Utensils.
- Metal foils E.g: Aluminium foils
d) Name two materials which do not show this property?
- Some metals like Sodium and potassium are brittle in nature. Hence, they don't show malleability.
- Other non-metals are also non-malleable.
