Bhakti movement started from the southern parts of the country, by Alvaras and Nayanars
The wave of Bhakti movement started from south India, by Alvaras-the devotees of Lord Vishnu and Nayanars-devotees of Shiva.
They travelled to various places singing hymns in Tamil in praise of their gods.
Later, many temples were built that became the sacred places for pilgrimage.
The compositions by the poets- saints became part of temple rituals in these shrines.
Some historians also believed that the Alvaras and Nayanars initiated a movement of protest against the caste system and the dominance of Brahmanas or at least attempted to reform the system.
