Read the passage and answer the following questions:
Kerala is a warm, moist land where harvests are usually good. Coconut, tapioca and rice are its
main crops.
Onam is one of Kerala’s main festivals. It celebrates the harvest time at the end of the monsoon.
The story behind the festival goes back to the legendary rule of a good king named Mahabali.
During his rule all men were equal and there was no evil, hate or crime.
Once a year, at Onam time, the people of Kerala say that the spirit of king Mahaballi visits his
people. So, people clean their houses and polish every brass pot and door handle. They decorate the
floor with fresh patterns of coloured powder.
The children of the family get gifts. The gifts are usually clothing of golden yellow colour, the colour
of the harvest. Young girls wear their lovely new clothes and dance in a circle celebrating the harvest.
Families go to the temple to make special offerings of thanks.
