Read the passage and answer the following questions
The Ungrateful Debter
One day in spring, when the whole kingdom was filled with beautiful blossoms and fresh tender leaves, the
king decided to look at his accounts and bring them up to date. In the process of doing this, one of his
debtors was brought into his presence. The unfortunate man owed the king one million dollars! He could
not pay his debt. As was the law of that kingdom then, the man, his wife, his children and everything he
had would have to be sold for his debt,
The man's face turned to ash when he heard that pronouncement. In desperation he fell before the king
and put his face in the dust. He begged, "Oh my lord, please have mercy on me. Please be patient with me
and I will pay it up. Please also do not separate my family
The king was filled with compassion for the man. He released him and totally cancelled the debt
The man, filled with jubilation, walked, skipped, danced all the way home. But as he was passing to a
house, he stopped for a moment. He rubbed his bearded chin and made a decision. Without knocking at the
front door, he entered the house and went up to a man who owed him $100. Before the second man could
do or say anything, he grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.
The second man fell down before him and begged him for more time. Be patient and I will pay," he
pleaded. But his creditor paid scant attention to his pleas. Instead, he had the man arrested and jailed until
the debt could be paid in full.
Meanwhile, the second man's friend went to the king and told him what happened. The king called for the
man he had forgiven and said, "You evil-hearted worm! Look here! I forgave you that exceedingly great
debt just because you asked me to Yet, when your debtor asked you to show him mercy you cruelly turned
him down. Shouldn't you bave had mercy on bim just as I did for you?"
Then, the angry king had the man sent to the torture chamber to be tortured until he settled every last cent
due
1- What did the king discover when he decided to bring his accounts up to date!
