Read the passage below and answer the following questions: (3)
A cylindrical shaped container is filled with water upto height H. A child drills three
holes near the bottom of container. These holes are at same height from the bottom.
Let the height of holes from bottom be h.
Child observes that water coming out from the holes which are at some distance from
bottom, falls at same distance from the container.
(a) Water coming out of the holes falls at same distance from the container. State the
reason.
(b) Out of the points A and B, at which pressure of water is high?
(c) If gas is filled in container instead of water, will it exert pressure on the
container?

Answer:

a) The two jets of water can fall at equal distance on the two sides of the bottle only if the pressure of water at the depth of 2 holes in the bottle is equal. (1) A liquid exerts pressure on the walls of its container. (2) A liquid exerts equal pressure at the same depth.

b) if the pressure of water at the depth of 2 holes in the bottle is equal. (1) A liquid exerts pressure on the walls of its container. (2) A liquid exerts equal pressure at the same depth.

c) Pressure is also affected by the volume of the container. If the volume of a container is decreased, the gas molecules have less space in which to move around. As a result, they will strike the walls of the container more often and the pressure increases.
