1. Jahangir, the fourth Mughal emperor ruled India in the 17th century, was also a renowned naturalist. As a young prince, he went along with his father Akbar on his campaign in Kashmir. There he fell in love with the natural splendour of the Himalayan mountains, streams, trees and flowers. This was the beginning of a life-long love for nature. Nurjahan, his wife, encouraged his interest in nature by laying out gardens in various parts of Kashmir.
2. Jahangir was gifted with powers of keen observation. He provides detailed descriptions of flowers in his memoirs Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri that form a botanical study of its own kind. Jahangir's descriptions of sone of India's common flowers are simple and accurate.
3. Jahangir's fame as a naturalist rests on the pictorial studies of birds and animals that appealed to his imagination for their unique physical features or habits. He nursed a pair of infant cranes for five years and took them with him on his journeys to watch their courtship habits. keen observations fill many pages of his memoirs. He was perhaps the first person in the world to have ringed birds and fish for future observations.
