Case Study

One day after returning from school Mona and Raju were discussing

about the resource management what their madam taught in class.

After sometime they decided to identify the resources and their uses in

and around their house. They found that there is vacant space on the

rooftop of their house which is not used intensively. Raju started

thinking how can this vacant space become a resource? Then they

decided to do rooftop vegetable farming here. Next day they brought

some waste empty cartoon from the fish market. Then they fill it with

soil and placed on empty rooftop of their house. They plant some seeds

of tomato, carrot, chili, garlic, coriander, and other leafy vegetables.

Mona told her mother to store the kitchen waste water after cleaning

utensils and vegetables. They started irrigating these vegetable plants

with this kitchen waste water. One day Mona’s father visited nearby

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to know about the use of manure to be used

in vegetable plants. They gave him some knowledge about the process

of manure formation (Vermicompost) form the household vegetable

waste. Accordingly they started to store the bark and other waste part

of vegetables and after decomposition it becomes manure. Now they

are using this manure in to their rooftop vegetable garden. After two

months they started to harvest vegetables for their own consumption.

Besides, working in the garden gives them immense pleasure and

satisfaction.
