The city of Lucknow has a fascinating past. Its rulers were famous for their glitter and glory and were called as the emperors of t he world. Lucknow’s past has left deep memories in the minds of men. Lucknow has drawn more attention than most Indian towns and cities. It is associated with good architecture, dance, music, creative writing and grand lifestyle. Lucknow is situated on the river Gomti. It has been in existence since the sixteenth century. It is surrounded by Gonda in the south and Ayodhya in the north. Lucknow was given the status of the University town by Aurangzeb. He established a seminary that later came to be known as Firangi Mahal. Lucknow was an unwalled town. The architecture was unique and grand. The famous Rumi Darwaza is a copy of the gateway at Istanbul. Other famous buildings are Machhi Bhawan, Daulat Khana and Chhatar Manzil. A distinctive architectural feature of Lucknow were the Imambaras or ceremonial halls that were used during Moharram. Apart from the architecture, the ‘nawabi’ culture of the place gave rise to the adjective ‘Lakhnavi’.‘Lakhnavi’ meant elaborate costumes, manners, leisure and over-elaborate etiquettes. Both men and women contributed equally to the culture of Lucknow. Women of the rich families enjoyed a position of respect at the court. Like the Mughals, the Nawabs of Lucknow were also patrons of art, music and literature. The nawabs themselves were poets and musicians. Urdu was the court language at Lucknow.
