So the old man chopped down the tree. He cut out the middle of the trunk, a section about two
feet long. With great labour he made a long-handled hammer of wood. On the New year he
decided to make a rice pastry. When the rice was boiled, granny put it into mortar. The old man
lifted his hammer to pound the mass into dough. The blows fell heavily and fast. The pastry was
all ready for baking. Suddenly the whole mass turned into a heap of gold coins. The old woman
took the hand-mill. She filled it with beam and began to grind. Once more gold coins dropped
like rain. The envious neighbours were peeping from the window and feeling amazed.
