This is the story of Happy School and Raman Mama, a very old man who was not very learned, yet wiser than many of us. There was one thing he knew better than anyone—
that loves begets love and there was nothing so bad in this world that could not be changed with love, kindness and understanding. And because he believed in this and acted accordingly, he was very popular with the young children. In Happy School, many a child who came with a lost and forlorn look and threw a tantrum every morning underwent a magical metamorphosis. Now this Happy School was no ordinary school. The shade of the big peepal tree was where the children learnt all their lessons. Most of the children who came to Raman Mama’s school could not afford pens or pencils or books or even a slate for that matter. The children were told to collect a little sand from the riverbed and spread it in front of them. Then with a little twig serving as a pen, they learnt to draw the letters of the alphabet on it. Geography was learnt by making large maps of the countries on the sand, and then filling in the mountains and hills with some more of it. The lakes and rivers had real water. History was the best subject of all. For here the children took part as in a drama, and waged wars, conquered territories, hatched plots and signed treaties, which they never forgot. Shopping was fun, with Raman Mama as the shopkeeper, rice, pulses , vegetables and fruits, were bought after paying the correct amount in shells and pebbles, each shell or pebble having its own value , of course. The children learnt to add and subtract, multiply and divide , in a very practical way. Each day of the week was divided into two periods and not more. And Sunday was a story day. On every public holiday, the old man took the children on an excursion to the neighbouring forest where, the children made friends with the trees and got to know their names. The children were so happy; they never quarreled amongst themselves and were always hungry to know more. This was one school that they could not stay away from!
