Read the passage given below.
A very interesting scene involved a sweetmeat seller, Chinibas. He peddles sweets in carthen pots hanging from the two ends of a pole which he carries on his shoulders. A fat jovial man, a non-professional we had chosen, was perfect for the part. The scene involved him passing outside Harihar's house on the other side and calling out-'Sweets for sale, do you want any sweets?' Durga and Apu run out of the house to look longingly at Chinibas knowing only too well that they can't afford to buy any sweets. Chinibas calls out again and Durga shakes her head and Chinibas goes on his way with his pots swinging with his gait. The sight is too enticing and Durga decides to follow Chinibas to watch other people buying sweets. Apu runs alongside. This is how the scene is described in the book. I wanted to make it a little more interesting by having their pet dog join in the pursuit. We had found a brown pariah dog during the first spell of shooting and used him in a few shots. It was an untrained dog, but it wasn't required to do anything that needed training. This time, however, the dog had to perform. He is shown sitting curved under a tree somewhere behind Apu and Durga and as soon as Durga runs out of the shot in pursuit of Chinibas, the dog seems to spring up and run behind her. Thus the procession would consist of Chinibus, followed by Apu, followed by Durga, followed by the dog. All through the day the dog had to keep working. I made Durga clap her hands behind her back and hold a sweet in one of them, to entice the dog.
