Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
When you think of the sea, you probably think of ships. We all know that ships are large vessels that float on water. These vehicles are different from boats in view of their sizes and passenger capacity. Technically speaking, a mode of water transport that weighs at least 5000 tons or above is categorized as a ship. Boats are quite compact in size. While ships operate in oceanic areas and seas, boats are operated in restricted water areas. They are engaged in a variety of activities such as transporting people or goods, fishing and warfare.
Nowadays, ships are being designed with new technologies, so that the ride in the sea is safe and pleasant. They have heavy machinery and navigational systems as they are required to operate across oceans. Ocean liners, cargo ships, war ships, coast guard ships and oil ships are a few types commonly known to us. The best way, of course, is to categorize a ship by its usage.
Like vehicles on land there are certain traffic rules followed by ships at sea. They cannot travel everywhere in narrow straits and at the entrance to a harbour. There are designated sea routes for ships. Any ship that needs to enter a port must do so only at designated times, that is, at high tide when water is drawn into the harbour. Out in the ocean, 'the rule of the road' is to stay to the right. At night, two ships can keep from crashing into each other by heading in the direction of the red light which is on the right side of the ship. On the left side there is a green light which helps avoid collisions between ships in busy 'sea lanes'.
