Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing the answer from the given options- It was a fine sight the temple elephant yoked to the engine by means of stout ropes with 50 determined men pushing it from behind and my friend Joseph sitting in the driving seat. A huge crowd stood around and watched in great glee. The engine begin to move. It seemed to me the greatest moment in my life. When it came out of the Gymkhana and reached the road it began to behave in a strange manner. Instead of going straight down the road it showed a tendency to wobble and move zig-zag. The elephant dragged it one way, Joseph turned the vehicle for all he was worth without any idea of where he was going and fifty men behind it clung to it in every possible manner and pushed it just where they liked. As a result of all this confused dragging the engine run straight into the opposite compound wall and reduced good length of powder. At this the crowd let out a Joyous yell. The elephant disliking the behaviour of the crowd trumpeted loudly strained and snapped its ropes and kicked down a further length of the wall. The fifty men fled in panic, the crowd created a pandemonium. Someone slapped me in the face it was the owner of the compound wall. The police came on the scene and marched me off. Find a word from passage which means mob

The answer is 'crowd'

  • The word closest to 'mob' is 'crowd'.
  • Crowd means a gathering of a large number of people.
  • Here, a crowd was watching the act of 50 people trying to push a vehicle to which an elephant was also yoked. The collective effort of men and elephant moved the engine, but the vehicle moved in a zig zag manner instead of going straight down the path which ultimately led to a collision with a wall. The crowd gave out a joyous yell. This upset the elephant and it kicked down the further length of the wall. This created a chaos among the crowd.
  • Thus, the passage indicates the behaviour of a crowd.
