Tibet's New Year
Losar is the Tibetan New Year festival and is
celebrated in spring lo' means year' and 'sar
means 'new' in the Tibetan language. It is a sacred
time of the year for Tibetan families (there's a
sizable population of Tibetans in India) Days
before the festival they clean their houses, get new
clothes,
pay
off their debts and settle all disputes.

The dinner on the eve of Losar consists of soup and dough balls. Soup is served in a huge dish
as everyone is required to drink nine cups of soup. There is excitement as the family members
bite into their dough ball For hidden inside each ball is something that will reveal a personality
trait. At the end of the meal, everyone puis back leftovers from their bowls into the huge soup
dish, as well as a piece of hair and any old item of clothing The dish is then taken out of the
house and left at a road crossing so that all the evil of the old year goes away with it
3. On New Year's Day, people get up early, put on their new clothes and pray. They also perform
a ritual in which they throw roasted flour, called tsampa, into the air for good luck
