It is not always easy for a woman to make her way in the world and, as the
phrase goes, 'to come to the front'. There are many reasons why this is so,
and there are exceptions, but the fact remains that, in general, a woman has
to fight harder to win a position than a man does. And it is because she is a
woman, declares Dame Ethel Smyth, that her power of composing music was
not more quickly and more readily recognised. Though today she is acclaimed
as England's foremost woman composer-indeed, one of England's foremost
composers, whether men or women-it is only after a long struggle that she has
achieved fame. She has won it not only by the fineness of her music, but also
because she has always refused to allow herself to be passed over
