In class V, Shallu Gusain had failed in her English exams. There was a happy twist to her story though –

possible is an IIM – Ahmedabad graduate who gave up the lure of making big money, to run a school
where learning would be fun.
2. At Manzil, located in the midst of bustling Khan Market, Ravi Gulati has helped many children to realize
their dreams. Students from 2 to 28, fill the classes. They come from the nearby servant quarters, slum
clusters, government schools and colleges. A board outside the “school” simply reads, “No. 13 – Manzil”. As you climb up the stairs and enter the
flat, you find a medley of students either narrating stories in English, learning Maths the amusing way,
singing, dancing, or picking up rudimentary skills in theatre. There are no marks or grades in this school,
no awards, or scolding. Manzil aims to make schooling a lesson in life skills. As Ravi says: “The idea is
to take education out of the books and make it real.”
4. After passing out from prestigious institutions like SRCC and IIM, what made him take up social work?
Ravi replies: “My experience at SRCC and IIM-A made me realise that there’s no end to competition. So,
I decided to step off the conveyor belt and make my own way.” And Manzil helped the 38-year-old
discover his calling.
5. It was in 1996 that Ravi’s mother, Indira Gulati, started an informal playschool for kids, aged between
three and five years, at Kotla Mubarakpur. Her initial aim was to encourage parents to send their kids with
special needs to school. As the mother of a daughter with multiple handicaps, Indira knew it was an uphill
task to get education for such kids. Today 60-odd children come here daily.
