When Alexis and Peter were but half a mile from home a great gaunt*
wolfsprang out of the trees bordering the road, and with great strides came
leaping after the sledge. "Drive on fast," shouted Alexis, seizing his gun and
taking aim at the wolf who was now no more than a few yards from the back
of the sledge. Alexis pulled the trigger. There was a click but no report: the 5
powder was damp. Dropping the useless gun Alexis fumbled for his knife,
for the wolf was almost upon him. But it was too late to draw the knife.
With a fierce snarling how the wolfsprang into the air and hurled himself
upon Alexis. As the great gaunt body shot through the air, Alexis flung his
thick sheepskin up over his head, and catching the wolf in its clinging folds 10
hugged the astonished beast to his breast with his mighty arms. The wolf
struggled and bit into the sheepskin. The frightened horses sped onward
like the wind. "Drive on, drive like fury!" roared Alexis, tightening the grip
of his iron arms about the heaving, twisting body of the wolf. Swaying and
rocking from side to side the sledge burst into the village with the horses 15
smothered with foam and Peter shouting and cracking his whip, while
Alexis, not tiring from his efforts, roared, "A wolf! Help! A wolf! Help!
Stop the horses!"
