Read the passage given below:
Mihir Sen, the legendary Bengalee swimmer of the 1950s and 1960s died
in Calcutta on June 11, 1997. He was almost forgotten. This long-distance
swimmer lived alone and neglected. Afflicted by various illnesses, he finally
died of heart failure.
Sen captured the public imagination when he became the first Asian to swim
the English Channel. He completed this feat in 14 hours and 45 minutes.
Returning home a hero, he soon swam all the seven major straits in the world,
including Gibralter and Panama. He was awarded the Padam Shri in 1961.
Born in 1930, Sen was not a child prodigy, as some believed. He mastered
the art of swimming in his 20s. His zest for adventure was not confined to the
waters alone. He urged the nation's youth to conquer the mountains and the
seas
It is a tragedy that such a brilliant figure should have been forgotten by the
public as well as the state. He suffered from temporary lapses of memory.
In the closing years of his life he did not even remember his own name.
But there can be no excuse for treating our glorious sports people in such a
shabby manner.
