Read the passage givenbelow.
Flood is one of the recurring natural disasters, which is an outcome of heavy rainfall and
the accumulation of excessive water in every living area. Floods next to wildfire are the
most disastrous and recurring calamities.Water may look so harmless and peaceful until
the large quantities termed floods harm us. A flood is the leak and submergence of
water on dry ground surfaces. The extent or severity of the floods is determined by the
strength, size, speed and directions of the surges.
Flooding can happen anywhere, including both coastal and inland locations. They are
further divided into five kinds – river flood, coastal flood, stormsurge, inland flooding and
flash flooding.
Cause of floods-Excessive rain, a ruptured dam or levee, rapid melting of snow or
ice, global warming or even an unfortunately placed beaver dam can overwhelm a river,
spreading over the adjacent land, called a floodplain. Coastal flooding occurs when a
large storm or tsunami causes the sea to surge inland.
Disease caused- Floods can lead to outbreaks of deadly waterborne diseases like
typhoid, hepatitis A, and cholera. They also lead to snake bites and infections.
After effects-no power supply and lack of clean drinking water. The primary effects of
flooding also include loss of life and damage to buildings and other structures, including
bridges, systems, roadways, and canals.
Financial damage - Floods cause more than $40 billion in damage worldwide annually,
according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Duration for developing flood - Most floods take hours or even days to develop, giving
residents time to prepare or evacuate. Others generate quickly and with little warning.
Contents of Flood safety kit – blankets, chargers, flashlights, first aid kit, rubber boots and
gloves,weather radio and batteries.
