Read the passagePrime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nation - wide Fit India Movement on National Sports Day ,
stressing on the need to be fit, PM Modi said that a healthy India is his goal and called for a strict
control on people’s lifestyle. The inaugural event was held at Indira Gandhi stadium complex in New
Delhi , where the PM administered a fitness pledge to the people of the country. Fit India Movement is
aimed at encouraging people to give priority to sports and fitness in their day – to- day lives.
Fitness is zero per cent investment with infinite returns. There is a surge in diabetes and hypertension
cases and other lifestyle diseases . We hear sometimes a 12 or 15-year -old is suffering from diabetes or
a 30 –year -old has had a heart attack. It is a worrying trend. Fitness is the need of the hour. But with
technology, physical activity has reduced . It has become fashionable to talk about fitness rather than act
on it.
World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends at least 60 mins of vigorous - intense physical activity
every day for children aged 5 -17 to improve cardio – respiratory and muscular fitness , bone health ,
and cardiovascular and metabolic health biomarkers. With rise in health issues in people , thanks to
unhealthy lifestyle and diet , it is important to get your kids to live a healthy life to keep diseases at a bay
. Encourage kids to play outdoor games, sports and do yoga. Make sure your child eats lots of fruits and
vegetables that contain essential nutrients beneficial for the body. Avoid junk food as much as possible
and get them to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Excessive screen time can negatively impact a child s physical and mental health , from increasing the
risk of obesity to disturbing sleep patterns .To keep kids away from the screen, parents should lead by
example. You can engage them in extra – curricular activities, reading, and also spent some quality time
with them .
Apart from physical fitness, parents should ensure their kids are mentally healthy too. Your kids should be
able to identify and communicate their thoughts and feelings clearly with you. Make sure you do not
ignore signs of mental health problem s and consult a doctor if the symptoms persist .
