Missile Man of India
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is an Indian scientist and the 11th president of India, who served our country
from 2002 to 2007. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development
of ballistic missile and launch-vehicle technology. He played a significant role in India's Pokhran-||
nuclear tests in 1998. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam comes from a humble background and rose to become
the first citizen of our country through sheer hard work and determination.
Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameshawaram, Tamil Nadu. His father was a boat
owner and his mother was a housewife. Since his family was poor, Kalam started distributing
newspapers to support his father after graduating from school. In 1954, he graduated from Saint
Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli. Not satisfied with his degree, he left for Chennai the following year to
enroll in the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) to study aerospace. While Kalam was working on a
senior class project, the Dean was dissatisfied with his lack of progress and threatened to revoke his
scholarship unless the project was completed within the next three days. He worked tirelessly to
complete his project and met the deadline, impressing the Dean at last.
After graduating in 1960, Kalam joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence
Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist. In 1969, Kalam was transferred to the
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) where he was the project director of India's first indigenous
Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-). Joining ISRO was one of Kalam's biggest achievements in life and he is
said to have found himself when he started to work on the SLV project.
Kalam has received many awards for his achievement. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1981, the
Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and the Bharat Ratna award in 1997 from the Government of India.
