c) Many Union officers have left to join the Confederacy, but every ordinary soldier and sailor has stayed loyal to the Union
Explanation:
- On 15th April , 1861, at the beginning of the American Civil War, the US President, Abraham Lincoln, called for a 75000- man militia (citizens enrolled for military service) to serve for 3 months following the bombing and surrender of Sumter Fort.
- However, a few slave states refuted to send troops against the neighbouring Deep South slave states of Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia, with the result that most such states in the Upper South of Virginia, North Caolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas, pronounced secession from the US and joined the Confederacy.
- In 1861 April the Regular Army of the US comprised around 16000 soldiers and officers organised into 10 regiments of infantry, 2 of cavalry, 4 of artillery, 1 of mounted rifles, and 2 of dragoons.
- Such regiments were primarily based in small forts of the Mississippi river, mostly to the west. After the secession of 7 states from 1860 December up to the formation of the Confederate States in 1861 February, several officers and military staff deserted from the U.S. Army to join the Confederate Army.
- However, common soldier or common sailor did not desert the US Army and stood true to their duty
