The story ‘How Much Land Does a Man Need’ is a story written by Leo Tolstoy.
The background of the story runs in sets of village background and fields as the story highlights a peasant and his greediness.
Pahom was a poor peasant who had no land of his own. When he finds that an old lady who owns some lands of 300 acres put up some land on sale, he gathers money by all means and buys some 40 acres.
He had land of his own and he becomes quite sufficient.
Again he finds out from another peasant that good land is being sold. He sells all of his land, castles, etc and shifted along with his family once again to the new settlement. He became even more sufficient.
He wanted more land and was not satisfied as a small part of his farm was a rented land. He wanted to have huger land of his own.
When someone informed him about the land that was being offered, he started his travel along with his servant.
He agrees to the deal with the Chief that he would like to take up the challenge to walk as much as he can for the day to grab a huge land just for 1000 rubbles. It was the way they sold the land.
Pahom was supposed to return to the spot before the sun sets to achieve his goal. He worked hard walking throughout the day. During his walk, he was greedy at times and walked beyond his goal. With great difficulty, he reached the spot with huge land in hand. But they found him dead after he reached the spot. He needed only the land of his height to be buried.
The story very clearly describes how a human could get greedy as he keeps winning money. The story pictures the deep and inner thoughts of a human and his greediness. The story reveals a moral and greediness could actually lead to destruction. It is important to have high goals and aims but it is also as important to have contentment and not to get greedy for things.
