The rest of the Mayflower Compact is very short. It simply bound the signers into a "Civil Body Politic" for the purpose of passing "just and equal Laws . . . for the general good of the Colony." But those few words expressed the idea of self-government for the first time in the New World.

- The Mayflower Compact ends with a brief conclusion. But those few lines represented the concept of self-government for the first time in the New World. It just bound the signers into a "Civil Body Politic" for the purpose of passing "fair and equal Laws... for the general advantage of the Colony."
- The term "body politic" was frequently employed in the law at the time of the Mayflower Compact to refer to companies of all kinds. In the 17th century, the term "corporation" was both more widely defined and more transitional than it is today.
- At the time of the Mayflower Compact, corporations of all kinds were referred to by the legal phrase "body politic" on a regular basis. The word "corporation" had a far broader definition and was used much more frequently than it is now.
- But after their ship was forced off course by perilous shoals and storms, the settlers instead made landfall in Massachusetts, close to Cape Cod, outside of Virginia's control. The Mayflower Compact was designed by colonist leaders to ensure that a functioning social system would prevail because they were aware that life without laws could be disastrous.
