Answers
Myth of Sisyphus
Sisyphus is a mythological character in Greek literature. He was a very wicked king of Corinth . He was a trickster by nature.
The Gods and Goddesses were very displeased with him. So when he wanted to reach heaven he was given the task of rolling up a huge boulder up the hill. As soon as the boulder reached up it immediately rolled down by the trick of the Gods, and the entire process had to be repeated . This continued till eternity and it is thought that Sisyphus still keeps rolling up the boulder.
In the given extract the old man bears a striking similarity with Sisyphus. He too is always occupied like Sisyphus in counting out the dried peas from one pan to another. His work is never ending. Just as Sisyphus' stone keeps rolling down, the old man's counting never ceases.
