"It is insane! Absolute madness to have a healthy living person forced to death just because her
husband is dead!" cried Mohan, as he heard that his childhood friend was to be burnt alive
because her young husband had died.
"A woman's life without her husband is worthless. What use is it to live a worthless life? She
might as well die," his mother sobbed.
"Why is her life worthless without her husband? Is it just a husband who makes life
worthy...surely not? And if yes, then she can marry again!"
"Don't say that! Or the priests will cut your tongue out for those words...marry a widow.
There is nothing else that makes the gods as unhappy as that!"
"Would it make these gods happy to see someone tortured to death? I know it won't be long
before this inhuman custom is put to an end by British law...but today, I won't let this happen".
"You'd better not meddle in this. Education and the company of your useless friends have put horrible ideas in your mind".
"Raja Ram Mohan Roy is convincing the British government to put an end to this. And this will
end! And today I will go and stop this by marrying a widow myself. Let's see what horror falls on me"!
