Q.1:- Who met Pip at Miss Havisham's house? Describe the meeting and the person.
Ans:- Miss Havisham's house matches her reputation. Pip describes it as “old brick, and dismal, and had a great many iron bars to it” and windows that are barred up. There is a courtyard in front, and the only way to enter is by ringing a bell and being let in by someone.
Q.2:- What was unusual about Miss Havisham's appearance
and her room?
Ans:- Miss Havisham is an eccentric lady who lives a life of seclusion. She has a reputation for being strange, and few have actually seen the inside of her house. Miss Havisham's house matches her reputation. Pip describes it as “old brick, and dismal, and had a great many iron bars to it” and windows that are barred up.
Q.3:- How did Estella repeatedly insult Pip?
Ans:- Estella speaks of Pip as though he is not present in the room. She ridicules his calling the knaves jacks, and derogates his "coarse hands" and thick boots. Pip, of course, is embarrassed by his boots and is awkward in her presence.
Q.4:- Was Miss Havisham's behaviour normal or strange?
Ans:- Miss Havisham is a bitter recluse who has shut herself away since being jilted on her wedding day. She never leaves the house and has stopped all the clocks so that she is unaware of time passing. She always wears her wedding clothes and has left the prepared wedding feast to decay in one of her rooms.
Q.5:- Why did Pip feel coarse and common and ashamed of himself?
Ans:- Pip is born into a common, lower-class family. His parents are dead, and all of his siblings are dead except for the adult sister who takes care of him. When Pip meets Miss Havisham, everything changes. He is struck by Estella making fun of him for being “coarse” and he begins to be ashamed.
