Ans. Maps often use symbols or colours to represent things and the map key explains what they mean. Map keys are often boxes in the corner of the map and the information they give you is essential to understanding map.

Ans. Some common features of maps include scale symbols and grids. All maps are scale models of reality.

A maps scale indicates the relation-ships between the distance on the map and the actual distance on the Earth.

This relationship can be expressed by a graphic scale, a verbal scale or a representative fraction.

(8) Read the paragraph titled ‘Symbols’ on page 6 and comment on it.

Ans. A map symbol is a graphical device used to visually represent a real world phenomenon or a characteristic there of on a map, working on the same fashion as other forms of symbols.

Map symbols may include point markers, lines regions, continuous fields or text these can be modified visually in their shape, size, color, patterns and other graphic variables.
