Earth Day
Read this passage.
Earth Day is observed globally and more than 1 billion people in 192 countries take part in it.
On this day, students of schools and colleges plant trees and clean their towns and cities. People
march, sign petitions and spread awareness about the importance of protecting our planet.
Industrialisation, smoke from vehicles, improper waste management, especially that of
non-biodegradable substances like plastic are some of the reasons that have led to the severe
damage of our planet. The waste that goes into our oceans and rivers is mainly home waste
and industrial waste which contains chemicals and harmful elements. When this waste is
burnt, it turns into smog that results in global warming. The air that we breathe is polluted
and therefore, diseases abound. So is our environment decaying?
Yes, it is but we can still try to protect it if we act swiftly. The theme of Earth Day 2018 was
'End Plastic Pollution'. When we dispose of plastic bags, they are thrown into the oceans
along with such other garbage. As they do not decompose on their own, they poison marine
life and lead to the death of thousands of aquatic animals. They also lead to the pollution of
the atmosphere.
The campaign to put an end to plastic includes:
• the adoption of a global framework to control plastic pollution.
creating awareness among citizens and enabling them to control plastic pollution.
urging citizens to reject, reduce, reuse and recycle plastics.
If we make a conscious effort to put an end to the pollution caused by plastics, our planet can
certainly be saved. Better late than never, as they say-let's begin NOW.
