One can never compare the experience that one gets while reading a good book to watching the same thing on the television.
When you read a book you are taken into a world which you create for yourself from what you understand from the book! You fall in love with characters that you imagine for yourself. Whereas in the tv series and movies you get to watch a pre-created world. There is very less use of your own imagination.
On the other hand, if you've read a book and also watched a movie that was made on the same story you'll see so many scenes missing. They edit an entire book to fit it into three hours.
And when it comes down to English books and movies, you can improve your language a lot more when you read something rather than watch it. Because you get to find meanings manually while reading a book, think about the sentences used and their formation.
Meanwhile, you can always read the book and then watch the movies. :-)
