MY CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A LEOPARD
(1) My name is Kailash Berad. I work as a peon at the Aarey Dairy in Goregaon, a suburb of
Mumbai. The road I take to my work runs through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is the
only wildlife reserve in the world that is in the middle of a bustling metropolis.
(2) One Monday morning in October 2012, I was riding my motorbike as usual on my way to the
dury. It was early, so there was not much tranfic, except for a couple of auto-rickshaws which
were some distance behind me.
(3) Suddenly, a leopard ran across the road. I found it difficult to brake in time. Though the bike did
n101 hit the animal, one of the tyres brushed against its side. It turned in a panic and lashed out at
my leg, making me lose my control of the bike and I fell. I expected the animal to pounce on me
and maul me. However. I was surprised to see it dart into the park. I think it may have been scared
off by the autos which stopped to help me.
(4) I am not the first one to have had an encounter with leopards - there are around 25-30 of then
in the park. Housing societies on the fringes have sighted leopards regularly in the vicinity of
buildings or even inside the compounds. Leopards have mauled or killed shanty dwellers whose
huts are built right inside the park. The government has tried to remove these encroachments bu
has not been successful.
