3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Bhubaneswar, Sept 10: A portion of a railway overbridge under construction since 2013 collapsed
in Bhubaneswar this afternoon, killing 41 year old Satyabrata Patnaik who was taking his daughter
Sheetal back home from her dance class. The eight-year-old is fighting for her life at AIIMS,
Bhubaneswar. Seventeen people are in hospital with injuries and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has
ordered an inquiry. A 10 meter portion of the T-shaped 1.6 km under construction overbridge,
connecting Sahed Nagar with Bomikhal and Rasulgarh, came crashing down around 12.30 pm from
a height of about 30 ft when concrete mixture was being poured on to the iron frame connecting two
pillars. As it felt, it brought down the iron scaffolding. Several commuters and labourers got trapped
underneath. "The process of concrete casting of slabs was going on. Concrete mixture was being
poured on the iron frame on the portion of the bridge near Bomikhal when all of a sudden the
structure collapsed and we were all trapped in the debris. Local residents rescued and rushed me to
Capital Hospital", said Amrit Kerketa, one of the injured labourers. Two engineers of the works
department have been suspended. Cranes and gas cutters were used in the rescue operation, which
ended around 9 pm. Chief Engineer (roads) Om Prakash Patel said : "Prime facie it appears that iron
scaffoldings supporting the structure was not of the required strength and that led to the collapse of
the under-construction portion. A detailed inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of
the mishap.
