“Reading comprehension is the ability to read and understand the meaning of the text” If one doesn’t have that comprehension skill, it will be like a parrot repeating a word which has been taught.
To comprehend a particular passage, one should have “summarizing, sequencing, problem-solving, self-questioning and drawing conclusions” skills. If these factors are not there, then, the child would not understand what it has read. That is why, reading practice is given importance in the early stage itself.
Actually, it starts when the child is a toddler and bed-time stories are being read. The mother reads and narrates the story repetitively. This helps the child to comprehend the meaning of the passage, later meaning of the word. This is how reading should be practiced.
Reading without comprehension is not a reading
Undoubtedly, reading without comprehension is not a reading. If you read but don’t understand what you are reading, the result will be non-understanding and confusion. Non-understanding will lead to confusion and disinterest in what you are reading and you will not be able to carry on your reading.
Reading with comprehension is an advanced level of skill. It requires advanced familiarization with the language structures such as language rules, vast vocabulary, and complex grammatical structures. In the absence of any of the above mentioned the total decoding won’t take place.
In order to enjoy the pleasures of reading one must always work on improving one’s grammar, vocabulary, and other language structures.
