Comprehension is the sole reason for reading. It is the ability to understand and interpret what is read. Many students fail their exams because they read but do not comprehend. There is a huge difference between reading and actually understanding what has been read.

A reader must be able to interpret what has been read, make connections between what has been read and previous knowledge that has been known, and to understand what has been read.

Many readers can read a page four or five times without understanding what was written, but once he/she could interpret the words then comprehension dawns.

Some students memorize for exams but afterwards if they forget a single phrase they realize that they know nothing. Such students cannot be compared to those who read, understood and could put their knowledge using their own words unlike those that rely on verbatim.

On the basis of this, it can therefore be stated that reading reading without comprehension is like not making an attempt to read at all.
