Benzaldehyde and acetophenone can be distinguished by the following tests. Aldehydes respond to Tollen's test. Benzaldehyde being an aldehyde reduces Tollen's reagent to give a red-brown precipitate of Cu2O, but acetophenone being a ketone does not.
