Action of bases and alkalis:
All bases react with acids to form salt and water this reaction is called neutralization.
NaOH + HCL --------> NaCI + H2O
Sodium Hydrochloric. Sodium. H2O
Hydroxide. Acid. Chloride
Etc,........
The reaction between hydrochloric acid dilute and Sodium Hydroxide is a neutralization reaction which can be seen by adding phenolphthalein indicator.
Phenolphthalein is colourless when added in acid.
Phenolphthalein is of pink colour when added in base.
Here ,phenolphthalein acts as an indicator, which is helpful in finding the sufficient acid has been added to neutralize all the alkali in a reaction.

Hope it helps!
