real life application of electrolysis of saline water(5 points)
Answers
Answer: Electrolysis has wide applications in industries. Some of the important applications are, as follows, (i) Production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water. (ii) Manufacture of heavy water . (iii) The metals like K, Mg, Al, etc., are obtained by electrolysis of fused electrolytes.
Two large scale applications of electrolysis come to mind. The first is the electrolysis of salt water to produce sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas, both of which are huge articles of commerce. The cost of electricity dominates the economics of this process so it is concentrated around places like Niagara Falls with cheap hydroelectric power. The second large scale application is the manufacture of aluminum metal. In the Hall Process, bauxite ore is dissolved in the molten mineral cryolite and aluminum metal is collected at the cathode of the cell. There are many important but smaller scale applications such as manufacture of the alkali metals (Li, Na, etc.) from their molten chlorides or electroplating metal objects with a protective layer of a different metal. Incidentally, there are important applications of electrochemistry in industry beyond electrolysis. For example, Monsanto manufactures adiponitrile (a building block of nylon-6,6) by electrochemical dimerization of acrylonitrile:
CH2=CHCN + 2H(+) + 2 e(-) → NC(CH2)4CN
