According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, when a person reaches a point where they ask about the meaning of their life, it’s a sign that they are ready to hear about it. We are “desires to receive pleasure”. We are living expressions of that pursuit. In fact, everything in nature is an expression of a lack seeking fulfillment. On the human level, these pursuits give people reason to live. Many people are content chasing food, sex, and family pleasures, as well as money, honor, power, and even the pleasure of knowledge. These pursuits can last a lifetime, even longer. But Kabbalists explain that automatically running around to fulfill desires that you didn’t even ask for in the first place, is not that much different than animals. In fact, some would argue, if our purpose was to only chase the fulfillment of our desires, then we would’ve been better off if we stayed in the animal level. Look how much fun these monkeys are having. They get all the benefits of being a humanoid and none of the horrifying pain. So when a human-animal wakes up one day and asks about the meaning of life it is the first step to becoming a true human. The word man in Hebrew is “Adam”. This word comes from the word “Dom’eh” which means “similar to”. Similar to what you might ask?

Kabbalists explain that there is a force that is opposite our “desire to receive pleasure”. It is a force of bestowal, a “desire to give pleasure” if you will. Kabbalists know this because they have attained that force, just like humans were able to attain, to perceive, to feel, to grasp all the other forces in nature - through the law of equivalence of form. Simply stated, you need to have “inside” of you similar qualities to the phenomenon you are trying to sense. Radios, TVs and smart phones all work according to this principle. The other principle at work here is the principle of relativity. You can only determine something from its opposite. We only know hot from cold, light from darkness, up from down, etc.

So you are a desire to receive pleasure who suddenly feel that there is more to life than simply chasing pleasure, in whatever shape or form, automatically. Unlike a dog chasing a bone on a string, you have an urge to raise your head up and find out who is the hand that is pulling this string. This urge was “implanted” in each of us precisely for this reason. To force us to move. This new desire that you are feeling is called a “point in the heart” and it’s the kind of desire that cannot be fulfilled with anything on the level of this world. And Kabbalah explains that to rise from the level of this world, from the level of the automatic pursuit of pleasure (fleeting, small, meaningless for the most part) we need to connect with other desires around us. In fact, all the higher aspects of nature—higher because they preceded us, we are a result from them—exist in the space between us. That’s where one can find the upper force of nature, the “desire to bestow” that had created our “desire to receive”. Coming our of ourselves, into that “space” is a lot like the difference between trying to understand how a computer works from looking at the images on the screen and actually opening the computer and looking at the hardware, the software that gave rise to those images and even the craftsman that made all of it. We’re still talking about a force in nature but we are forced to use the words of our language to describe it, however limiting they are.

So savor the opportunity, and use the sorrow you feel on this “level” to start rising to a higher “level”. To your true destiny of being “Adam”, “similar” to the upper force of nature. And the upshot of this whole thing is that when humanity will begin to work in this direction and to connect, even simply on the level of this world, everything will start to change and all the problems we see on this level will simply disappear. It’s a fine adventure, one worth waking up to every morning.
