There are four great realms or spheres of the Earth. The first sphere is known as the lithosphere. It consists of the earth's crust. It is the realm of land. The hydrosphere is the realm of water. Life first originated in water. The atmosphere is the realm of air. The narrow zone where the air, water and land meet is known as the biosphere. This realm supports life.

The names of the spheres have been derived from Greek words like litho which means rock, hydro which means water, atmo which refers to air or vapour, and bio which refers to life. The four spheres are interconnected and make up a complete system of life on Earth.
